Summer Skin Care Tips
Is your summer skin care routine doing its job? Or, has the hot, sticky weather got your face feeling grimy? Does your makeup run off your face by noon? Does your oily T-zone shine like a new penny in the midday sun? Can you already feel the sweltering heat of August approaching? We can all relate. We want to look good, but summer heat just makes us want to throw up our hands and wait for fall. Well, don’t give up on looking polished, beautiful and cool.I’ve got summer skin care tips for you right here.
I've also got a list of powerhouse high tech skincare ingredients for you too.
Now that the temperature is rising, your summer skin care routine just needs an update. No one wants to wear heavy moisturizers and makeup in the full summer sun. Some people’s skin seems to become an oil slick, & needs only the lightest treatments and the barest makeup. Other people still need a good dose of moisture, particularly if you have older skin and live in desert climates like Arizona or Nevada. Then there are the combination skins in the middle that have a little of both, & need products that meet these needs.
Well, for those who can’t make heads or tails out of all the products out there, I offer a little advice on how to treat your summer skin.
Since we all feel like lightening up on our summer skin care, I’ll cover some essentials, treatments and moisturizers for the warmer temperatures.
Essential Summer Skin Care
Combination and Oily Skin Care:
I address these together because now is the season when combination skin shows its oilier side, it’s just a matter of degree.
Cleanse using something light and foaming, yet not stripping. Stripping the skin of its moisture barrier will only make the skin respond by pumping out more oil to make up for the difference.
Products to try: Clean&Clear, Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser, Philosophy Purity Made Simple
A toner is a good idea for oily skin in the summer, but for combination types maybe only in the T-zone depending on how oily you are. A good tip is to keep your toner in the refrigerator for a cool, refreshing treat in hot, humid climates.
Products to try: Sea Breeze, L’Oreal, DHC Acerola Lotion (despite the name this is actually a liquid product rich in vitamin C from the acerola berry)
Keep treatment products light and easy. Gel formulations are great. If anti-aging is your concern, and maybe it’s not such a major concern, because oily skin wrinkles less, then there are a few things you can maintain.
A good eye care gel will keep the crows feet away. Avon Anew Repair Eye Serum is light but keeps an effective touch of moisture around the delicate eye area.
A light all-over face serum with anti-oxidant ingredients is always your friend because it’s a good defense against the general aging process. You can’t go wrong. This may even replace a moisturizer in your routine if you are particularly oily in a humid environment.
Products to try: Olay Regenerist, DHC Acerola 100 (a spritz on treatment from the acerola berry, Avon Anew Photo-Radiance Treatment SPF 15, Caudalie Vino Perfect.
My new favorite is Radiant Dual Serum by Lumene, a European brand recently added to the boutique skin care section of the CVS drugstore chain. This product delivers day time and night time formulas in the same package, hence the name dual serum, so you get two in one. This only nudges out my standby favorite Caudalie Vino Perfect because of price. Lumene is only about $19.99 & Caudalie is about $75 or so. You do the math!
Extra Ingredients to look for: Vitamin B products are good for oily skin shine control. DHC also makes a good shine control cream called Matte Cream which really works on my T-zone.
You must keep up on the sunscreen, at least an spf 30 every day! Otherwise, everything else is a waste of time and money for you. The sun can create more long term damage in one unprotected day, than a month of faithful and expensive skin care.
Some to Consider: Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster, Clinique City Block Sheer Oil Free Daily Face Protector. A new category of sun protection now comes in a mineral powder & brush form. Think of a larger blush brush with the sun protection in the handle. All you do is brush it over your face. It works on bare skin all over or over makeup. Genius!
Two product lines to try: Dr Denese Sun Shield Powder Brush Spf 20, Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral spf 30 Powder Brush, both @ $30.00.
If you are indeed oily then you can likely skip a moisturizer after your serum and sunscreen. If, however, you live in a more moderate climate or you are exposed to a lot of drying air-conditioning, or you just feel that your skin needs a little something, then here a few recommendations for light moisture:
DHC has a great line of light moisture products such as: Acerola Gel, Easy Care Milky Lotion-Oily, Normal, Dry formulations, and Rich Moisture, also Clinique Moisture Surge, Philosophy Hope in a Jar
Dry Skin:
Even though you are dry, you probably still want to lighten up from your winter routine.
For cleansing use a mild, non-foaming cleanser. Foam usually means soap or other ingredients that may strip your skin of vital moisture. If it’s really hot and sticky where you live, you might find a gel cleanser to be refreshing.
All over treatment
Dr. Denese HydroShield Face Serum, Philosophy Save Me (this is a serious product with vitamin C, Peptides, and Retinol for mature skin)
Hydrating moisture: Again DHC offers a variety of good choices: Ceramide Milk or Cream, Platinum Silver nanocolloid cream
Really dry or mature: Try these at night—DHC Extra Nigttime Moisture, Tocophero E cream. Their olive oil can also be used to supplement a lighter moisturizer. Just a few drops of cosmetic grade olive oil is excellent for the skin. Don’t be afraid of it, it won’t break you out. If you’re really dry, I can almost promise that you’re going to love it. But don’t mix it with these heavier creams, just a little with a lighter daytime moisturizer, and you’ll be in love with your skin.
Foundation:
Ok, the last thing you may want on your summer skin is a foundation in hot, sticky weather, but fortunately, we live in an age of high-tech formulations that are feather light and come in a host of formulations, even clear such as Philosophy The Present Clear Makeup, not really a foundation, but a skin treatment that evens the skin and is good for you too.
You also might consider:
Tinted Moisturizers: Laura Mercier with spf 20
Mineral Makeup: A true savior in hot weather, try Bare Escentuals or Jane Iredale brands. I have to admit that I’m now partial to Iredale because of her truer colors. They just seem to work better on darker skin tones. Also, L’Oreal now makes a mass market version at a drugstore price.
If you’re in a hot, humid climate stay away from liquids and cream foundations. Sometimes an all over powder bronzer can do the trick. I’ve been using Laura Mercier bronzing powder. It looks great!
I also use Benefit Cosmetics, and find that these really hold up in the summertime too.
I hope these summer skin and makeup tips help. After all we girls just want to have fun, and look good doing it!
